Sex and the City

A movie with the same title of this post was made a couple of years ago in which our favorite "Carousing  Cougars", Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha decided to wing their way to Abu Dhabi and relieve a few wealthy Sheiks of their dish-dash-ah's and dignity.

The fact is the UAE government forbade the movie to be shot in the country due to the sexual nature of the film. Production was in Morocco and some sets were made in that country that mimicked Abu Dhabi landmarks. This is obvious in the above clips. In the first one, mountains are seen in the background. There are no mountains in the Abu Dhabi area except that big rock near Al Ain. The second clip shows an outburst by one of the gals in a public place that surely would have resulted in jail time and possibly deportation in Abu Dhabi. The middle finger is best not used there!

You might ask why the producers just didn't have our lascivious ladies travel to Morocco in the screenplay. That would make more sense, right? Most Americans don't know the difference between the two countries anyway. I suspect the UAE government was a major investor in the film in exchange for Abu Dhabi's worldwide exposure by the film. Ironically, the movie was never screened there.

What got me thinking of this attitude about sexuality was a Post by my Blog- Buddy Neil. In UAE supermarkets and pharmacies, all kinds of sexual lotions, oils and condoms are prominently displayed.  Viagra, Cialis and other ED drugs are sold over the counter right next to the headache pills. A lot of Westerners who consider Arab countries as extremely prudish would be surprised at what goes on.

One Dirty Little Secret is that prostitution is rampant in Abu Dhabi, much less than in Dubai but common nonetheless. In just about any tourist hotel you can find ladies that "play for pay".  Some venues are more active than others. In the bar of one internationally branded hotel, I would get latched onto and my crotch grabbed by a girl(s) 5 minutes after walking in the door. It was Ladies' Night  all night, every night at this place. A co-worker had a phone number he could call and "special order" a girl and she would show up within the hour. I've heard rumors of brothels on the outskirts of town near the labor camps to service those guys.

These women are not the "crack whores"  one would find at street level in many Western countries. They are regular women that are supplementing their meager day jobs as housekeepers and cooks.. Most are Fillipinas and Chinese but a large number of Eastern Europeans are showing up. This type of activity is about as open as can be without being obvious to the average citizen. The police and officials certainly know about it and seem to turn a blind eye. I have several theories for this:

1. Money. Someone in the high strata of the local society and/or business community is making a fortune and the word coming down to police is to ignore all but the most attention-attracting behaviors.

 2. Seeing how the vast majority of expats are men, the government is quietly allowing the sex industry to exist as an "outlet". In a country where it is illegal for an unmarried couple to co-habitate, dating is next to impossible due to the M/F ratio and local women are Verboten!, such "outlets" are normally few and far between.

3. A  combination of the above. The UAE is a very self-conscious country with a tinge of an inferiority complex.

If my theories are right, I think it is an example of forward thinking to unofficially allow the sex industry to quietly operate. It solves what could be potential problems although I think the money angle trumps any altruism from the government. Hey, I don't care...it works and everybody seems happy with the arrangement.  Just like everything else in the UAE, things are very different when you scratch below the surface. Beware not to take so much rope that they can hang you with, however. Keep your head low.

@ Neil,
Make that two special Daily Deals with the Joy Juice!

@ LoLy
Yesterday you loved me, today you hate me. Yes, I consider your country a sand box. There is not much more to see. The beaches are nice but otherwise, meh!

I respected the UAE just enough to keep from going to jail. Your country has to EARN respect from others and to me that just didn't happen.

There are millions of Arabic Muslims living and working in the US and Europe that do not even try to respect their adopted countries so do not lecture me about that...it works both ways! Do you understand now?

I know there are many immigrants in Europe that stand out , and not in a good way, but what i noticed is that the vast majority of immigrants to the US, and i mean legal migrants, not illegal border crossers, do a pretty good job on integrating.
I am intrigued as to what sort of practices you consider to be lack of respect by American Muslims towards America ?

He's left the county and if you didn't see in his last post upon leaving, he's been bashing the UAE ever since.

Someone must have wronged him in some way over there, as his initial posts were always upbeat and exciting. Talking about the way of life, travel, and interesting occurrences in the Emirate and his ex-pat take on it.

His posts have gotten darker and less interesting to read. I only come here now to see how far his bitterness has come. And it is in full swing...as you can see.

In regards to this post (and others) he should talk. He lives in all places - Las Vegas. Talk about a fake facade, foreclosures, prostitutes, drugs, crime, gambling, etc. He lives in the cesspool of the USA, and talks down to the UAE? He could easily be writing about Vegas in these highly critic posts.

Let it go already...

@Mohammad, I was once refused taxi service by a whole row of Muslim drivers at Bradley International Airport (Hartford Connecticut) because I was merely carrying an unopened bottle of wine I bought at a duty free.

The one that finally agreed to take me to my hotel gave me shit the whole way and made me put the bottle in the trunk. Seems a local Imam put out a Fatwa on transporting alcohol. The driver took my money though.

Funny, no problem in Abu Dhabi!

@Anonymous,
Because of the UAE government censorship, I really could not write much more than glowing accounts of the country. I can now and I am finally free to express the bad things I experienced.

I wrote for a local entertainment magazine when I was in the UAE and they were almost shut down because in one article the body of water surrounding Abu Dhabi was referred to as the "Persian Gulf" instead of the PC "Arabian Gulf".

I was in the office when the Editor got the call and she was in a panic. After that, you think I would speak my mind in my blog and risk deportation, prison or worse? I can do that here in the US and my internet is not censored either.

I had a friend that had to do a "runner" because he call a car salesman an idiot and it became a police matter. That would never happen here.

Las Vegas is not known as "Sin City" for nothing but at least it is honest about it and is one of the most visited cities in the world. Many rulers of Abu Dhabi spend a lot of time and investment money here. Can you spell hypocrisy?

Prostitution is much more common in AD than Vegas where it is also illegal.

Let's not forget Dubai, I think it exceeds Vegas in the "Plastic Banana" city category. The place is depressing with the much promoted Palm Islands sinking back into the sea with sea snakes and derelict buildings everywhere. It is the Middle East "Detroit"!

In the end, it was the hypocrisy and inferiority complex of the UAE that wore me out.

At least flipping the middle finger to a bad driver or dissing the government here in the US will not land me in jail.

The UAE citizens are addicts of the government largess and you will never become truly free until you start refusing those checks and thinking and taking responsibility for yourselves. You are all being paid for your silence and compliance. I do not respect that.

That being said, Sheikh Zayed is truly one of my personal heroes! I admire what he did for the UAE and its citizens in such a short time.

I have lived and worked in the Abu Dhabi for several years. Like most xpats, I am there for the money. It is actually a nasty place. Prostitution is rife but muggings, theft and drugs are almost non existent. Alcohol is also readily available. In fact most of the xpats live on the stuff. It is readily available and pretty cheap. My guess is that most xpats wouldnt bring their wives or children to this place. They can drink a go with prostitutes and generally carry on like children in candy factories. It is amazing to see some fellow, executive type,50 or more years, with some 20 year old Chinese or Russian whore at breakfast or in the evening. I suspect that this place has cost a lot of marrages. It is an ugly place and the locals are hypocrites in their avowing to be Muslims, but then they allow and participate in this. Even the Sheiks fly in prostitutes from Italy and it is common knowledge.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are now on the sex tourism trail. The Muslims in these countries are renowned hypocrites, especially the Royals who fly whores in from Italy. Prostitution is widespread, booze is readily available and this is the reason so many corporates have relocated there and conduct meeting there. It is in the same catagory as Bangkok, Amsterdam and S America. Great place to visit and work for a while. But dont take the family.
